Since 1998, Persinger Architects and Associates have been designing for educational institutions and local government projects. The priority we place on service and the small, flexible size of our firm makes us well equipped to handle the unique challenges presented in designing for educational institutions, as well as the sensitive timelines involved in project funding. We work closely with the faculty, parents, administration, and community to design spaces that solve the challenges and fulfill the purpose of their project.
Our experience with institutional design includes new school construction, libraries, cafeterias, gymnasiums, remodeling projects, new roofing, storm water management, and sustainable design.
Educational Projects:
Client: Roseland Union School District
Project: Roseland High School
Year: In Conceptual Design Phase
Roseland High School is a proposed new High School building in Santa Rosa. The beautiful curvilinear design comes from the smooth natural curves seen in native plant life. Although the form appears complex it actually is constructed from innovative modular frames that dramatically reduce the construction cost. Natural daylight and ventilation were carefully considered in the design of the project to minimize energy use while still keeping the spaces comfortable.
Client: San Bruno Park School District
Project: Parkside Intermediate School
Year: 2011
San Bruno Intermediate School was completely redone to help increase interest in the wonderful school. Two large new modular buildings with a central courtyard where constructed to create a safe, comfortable, and attractive new center of the school. Standardized modular frames where used to minimized cost while still meeting all of the district’s needs. Solar panels designed to fit onto existing roof structures produce much of the campuses energy while natural lighting keeps classrooms well lit during school hours. Custom fences, gates and cameras make sure the campus is protected from vandalism.
Client: Sonoma County Office of Education
Project: Amarosa Academy
Year: 2011
Amarosa Academy is a new school on Dutton Avenue in Santa Rosa, California. The entire campus is designed around a central courtyard to encourage interaction and allow for easy visual access to much of the campus. Landscaping with native plants is due to take place in the near future in order to improve the campus aesthetics. Standardized modular structures reduced construction cost while eliminating the need for a structural engineer, therefore saving the client a vast amount of money.
With Persinger Architects extensive experience with the Division of the State Architect the project plans where approved just months after the initiation. This qualified the project for state grants. At no additional cost to the client, Persinger Architects applied for and received a significant portion of the funding for the project from limited state bonds. At the time of approval the school received the highest funding of any school in California for its sustainable features. These sustainable features cover the campus from solar panels to onsite composting to additional bike racks to much more.
Client: Arena Union Elementary School
Project: New Dining Hall and Library
Year: 2010
Two new buildings where constructed for the Arena Union School District. A new library and Dining Hall provided much needed space for the growing school. Orientation of the buildings where carefully considered in order to maximize natural daylight and reduce energy loads. A central clerestory draws light deep into the building on even the cloudiest of days and makes the building feel much more spacious.
Modular construction sped up construction time allowing for most of the project to be constructed during the summer while kids where off campus. This modular design also significantly decreased the construction cost while not limiting the design of the project. Close interaction with the architect and school faculty allowed for the building to meet all the needs of the users.
Client: Roseland Union School District
Project: Roseland Elementary School Library
Year: 2009
The library at Roseland Elementary School follows a simple design that respects the existing architecture of the campus. Materials were carefully selected to make sure they will withstand the heavy use.
Client: Lagunitas School District
Project: Lagunitas Middle School Gymnasium
Year: 2009
The new gymnasium for Lagunitas Middle School used pre-manufactured and recycled materials to reduce construction time and cost, as well as environmental impact. Solar panels located on site provide much of the power for the building. The large open space of the gymnasium was designed to be flexible to the user’s needs.
Client: Harmony Union School District
Project: Salmon Creek Falls Environmental Center
Year: 2008
The Salmon Creek Falls Environmental Center is the first public elementary school building in California to receive LEED Platinum status. The structure serves k-8 students for the Harmony Union School District. The project required many different programmatic spaces including an enclosed cafeteria, meeting space and community rooms. Natural lighting, careful material selection, ventilation, community support, and site impact were all very important factor in achieving LEED Platinum certification.
Master Planning
Persinger Architects works closely with the district faculty to ensure their visions are clear expressed in our designs. By working directly with the lead designer clients can personally express what they believe is important and what they have envisioned for their sites. This direct connection with the designer ensures that the client’s vision is not lost in the bureaucratic chaos of large firms.
